Congratulations to all the swimmers who have achieved a National cut in one or more events. And special recognition to those swimmers who will be part of the Countryside Torpedoes Long Course National Team for the first time.

The meet starts with Carolyn and Carlo swimming in the 1500m event Monday evening. Carolyn’s heat swam before Carlo’s and she dropped time to take 20th place. If this were prelims, she could come back and swim in the new C final. Carlo dropped nearly a full minute off his seed time with a very consistent pace to claim 8th place and put Marty Hubbell’s old record on notice that it’s going down next time. Too bad there’s not an A final to give Carlo another chance this week.
CY had five individual swimmers and the men’s relay in the first night’s finals. Breann McDowell broke a long-standing record in the 400m Freestyle during the preliminary session by over 3 seconds with a 4:25.00.
More team records are being broken or improved today. Lynn Brotherton broke the 100m Butterfly record in the first event of the morning and Breann McDowell improved her 200m Freestyle record by over 2 seconds. Carlo Biedenharn set a new record in the 800m Freestyle just minutes after leading off the 400m Freestyle Relay. Sam VanDyke swam in the C final of the 100m Butterfly almost as fast as Lynn did in the morning and better than the previous record.
The preliminary session is over and everyone swam at his or her best. Six swimmers are coming back for finals in individual events and both of the 800m Freestyle relays swim tonight. Great finals swims in the 100m Freestyle where Breann improved her record and in the 200m Backstroke where Steven slashed 2.5 seconds off the year-old record with his 2nd place finish that was a tight race from start to finish. Then we came to the close of the evening with some great relays. First, Lynn, Sam, and Breann decided to trade their record with Anna from last year for a new one with Carolyn (which is only fair since Lynn replaced Sydnee from 2007). Then Carlo decided to trade Matt, Andrew, and Jim from the 800m Relay record last year for a new crew with Tyler, Ethan, and Steven.
Another great day of swimmers at their best! Through event 40 with
just the 400m Medley Relays and Carolyn’s 800m Freestyle to
go, all the swims have been LTB or right at the seed time.
The Women’s team ended up 17th, the Men 7th,
for a Combined Team score that places Countryside in 8th
place overall for the meet.
