1.
Do I have to be a good swimmer to
join the team?
All you need to be able to do is swim 25 yards of freestyle and
backstroke. (This is the length of Y’s indoor pools)
2.
Do I have to tryout?
Yes, we hold swimmer evaluations to help us
place swimmers into appropriate groups. We will have these in
August & September for the winter season and April for the
summer season, or by appointment. Please contact head coach
Brad Isham brad.isham@ymcastaff.org
3.
What if I’m involved in
other sports?
Most of our swimmers participate in other
activities, too. Our practices are usually offered extra days a
week to allow for more opportunities to participate.
4.
Are meets held every weekend?
No, and it is up to you how many meets you
enter based on your schedule. We usually offer 2 weekends per month
October – February.
5. What
are the benefits of being both a YMCA and USA Swimming
team?
Being both a YMCA and USA Swimming team allows our swimmers to
participate in a variety of meets and at different competitive
levels. We compete in local YMCA meets, as well as YMCA
Nationals. Our swimmers also compete in local USA Swimming
meets, as well as State and National meets. Whatever the
swimmer’s goal, there is a path available to them.
6. How
convenient are practice times and locations?
All practices are held at Countryside YMCA in Lebanon. We have
an 8 lane 25 yard pool as well as an 8 lane 50 meter outdoor
pool. This offers our swimmers excellent access to and
flexibility of training time, with no interruption of scheduled
practice times throughout the season for non Torpedo events.
7. What
is the parent volunteer commitment for the Torpedoes?
For a program of this size, we ask our parents for a minimal
volunteer commitment. Currently, we host 1 invitational meet, 1
high school meet and 1 championship meet during the winter season.
Parents are asked to work 4 half-day sessions between our
invitational and the high school invitational meet and 2 sessions
during the championship meet your child attends.
8. The Torpedoes have an
excellent tradition of successful swimmers in all strokes and
distances as well as a great track record of sending swimmers to
college.
Our swimmers have had success at all levels. Swimmers in
our program will have the opportunity to swim in all events in
order to expose them to all aspects of swimming and develop their
talents to their highest potential. Our program philosophy is
the long term development of the swimmer so many are excited and
given the opportunity to continue to swim in college
9. Do I
have to be a member of the YMCA to join the Torpedoes?
Yes, every swimmer on the team must be a member of the
Countryside YMCA with that comes the many benefits for a family of
a YMCA membership
